Monster: Vine Beetle (Knuckle Bug)
A Vine Beetle is a thumb-sized green bug that is common to the lord vine. This vine grows natively in warmer climates, and only on the stone face of castle walls. Manor caretakers normally grow it intentionally as a means to deter wall-climbing thieves. It is not the vines themselves that act as the deterrent, but the small beetles that inhabit them. Anyone stung by a beetle suffers minor paralysis to the location of the wound–normally this would be a climber’s hand. While the paralysis is only temporary, the effect is enough for any climber to lose control of his or her extremity, resulting in a fall. These bugs should be treated as a trap DC14/CL2. They can be smoked out of a climber’s path, or the climber can attempt to climb around the vines. This check should be repeated with every climb check, based on the height of the wall. Because the beetle has a strong vine piercing stinger gloves do not prevent the sting, but grant a +2 to save vs. poison (DC15/CL3).
