The Crop-ear King stood with both hands set firmly on the metal ring surrounding the small divining pool. Glaring in anger into the ripples before him. “Where are they, Penleigh” he roared.

The human seer could find no words. “I am sorry my Lord. I cast the stones into the pool, but I see nothing.”

“You lie” The king lurches upright grabbing the frightened seer. “I lost four of my best men to bring you here, and you… throw stones! My adversaries bring down volumes from the twilight– rest assured they are hearing my words now, and you cast stones that you found on my tower floor.”

“Nnn No my lord, they are special stones.” The seer reaches for the rocks resting in the basin of the pool.

A quiet falls over the tower room after a short and sudden gasp. The seer’s blood trickles down his arm and into the pool, encircling his fingers. The shapes do not begin form until the King is well below in the courtyard.
